I’d like to thank little Madeline’s dad for capturing and sharing the wonder and amazement his daughter felt while anticipating her very first train ride. I love the way every part of the experience has her full attention. She internalizes the sights, the sounds and the rush of the approaching locomotive until it all bubbles over into absolute joy. And she has no qualms about expressing it freely! When I think about or take time to thoughtfully gaze upon the work of engineers — iconic bridges, clean water making its way to my glass, or the infrastructure that makes commerce possible — I start to feel just like Madeline. The only thing that keeps me from containing my awe and enthusiasm is merely the fact that I have to act like a grown-up now that I am one. But isn’t it refreshing to be reminded of just how captivating and astounding infrastructure truly is?
